Finding Hope Through Trust http://www.sfsdayoungadults.com/archive/2009/09/17/finding-hope-through-trust/ http://www.sfsdayoungadults.com/archive/2009/09/17/finding-hope-through-trust/#comments Thu, 17 Sep 2009 17:49:11 +0000 Tony Devotion Thoughts http://www.sfsdayoungadults.com/archive/2009/09/17/finding-hope-through-trust/ As I grew into adulthood I learned to trust the counsel my father gave. Although I didn’t always agree, still I would respectfully listen and store away the counsel in my mind.

Now I was moving to Washington State and my father once again gave me some council. Among the council given was this tid-bit. Never allow your gas tank to go below 1/2 when traveling in remote areas. Well now that seemed reasonable but 1/2 tank is a lot of gas. Perhaps 1/4 tank is a bit more realistic. So as I was traveling very late into the night or rather early morning. I saw a gas station up ahead I looked at the gas gauge I had just under 1/2 tank well my dads council came to mind and I reasoned it away.
Continuing on my journey I was happy to see I was making very good time. I should easily make my destination ahead of schedule. After a time I looked at the gas gauge I was going to need some gas soon. Still I traveled on happy with my schedule. Lost into my thoughts I suddenly realized I haven’t seen a gas station for a very long time.
My gas gauge now below empty and no station in sight. Dads words came to me “never let your gas get below 1/2 tank when in rural areas”. Panic came over me it’s 4:00am and nothing in site. Now this is many years before cell phones. A dime a call but there are no phone booths out here.
Finally I found some hope, a sign for a “gas station” the sign says “Last Chance for Gas”. Relief feels my heart as I near the station only to find it closed. So I park and wait till morning breaks and the station opens. My schedule now lost all the benefits of not losing time getting gas earlier are now totally lost.
It’s cold outside but I dare not use the heater for fear of running out of gas.

For another council from dad comes to mind “when you use the very last gas in your tank you get dirty fuel in your carburetor and take the chance of needing it removed and repaired”. I’ve learned a hard lesson already perhaps I should heed the council.
Too cold to sleep I wait for the Sun to rise and bring me hope and warmth.

Finally the sun is breaking now I can see things much clearer. Oh no, this looks like this station has been closed for quite some time. I get out into the frigid air and investigate.
My heart falls as my fears are realized. This station has been closed for a very long time.
Now I slowly walk back to the car talking to the Lord. What do I do Lord?I should have listened. Please help me.

I continue my journey now with my head lowered. Will I make it? How far to the next gas station?
I get to the first hill about a mile from where I have been setting. As I begin to crest the hill I see hope yes it’s true there are three all night gas stations all light up ready to serve me. I can coast from here if needed. Whew!

Our heavenly father is always speaking to us giving us council but do we not only listen. Do we trust and obey. To trust and obey is not to reason the council but to follow the council because we trust the source. God will hold nothing back from us unless it will go against our salvation.
The book of Job says it well:
And you would be secure, because there is hope; Yes, you would dig around you, and take your rest in safety. Job 11:18

Blessings Tony
